Stephan and family appear on a number of census records:
Four of the above children appear in the 1901 census as resident together at Ashton-upon-Mersey in the county of Chester. They are all single and are: Maria (aged 64), Adelheid (aged 63), Charles (aged 52), and Helena (aged 49). The original sheet from the 1901 census can be viewed here in PDF. Child No. 13, Ernest Edgar, is recorded as having died aged 23 (death registered in the Salford district, Sept 1/4 1878). Three of Stephan's children: Frederica; Edward; and Lawrence married three members of the Ermen family, two siblings and a cousin: Edward married Julie Ermen; Lawrence married Julie's sister Octavia Ermen and Frederica married Julie and Octavia's first cousin Henry Ermen. Sons Thomas, Walter, and Herbert emigrated to Australia and there are descendants of these three. Later, some of these descendants emigrated to Canada. The fifth son on this list, Robert, married a Japanese lady, Kini Myandera. According to family tradition they lived in Yokohama and their house was furnished in two distinct styles; some rooms were Western and others Eastern but never mixed. They had three daughters:
