| Name | Age | Occupation | Were you born in this county? |
| James Matthews | 36 | MS | N |
| James " | 2 | Y | |
| Mary " | 38 (?) | N | |
| Ann " | 9 | N | |
| Elizabeth " | 7 | N | |
| Victoria " | 4 | N |
Notes:
1) The entry is very clear but the enumerator forms some letters and
numbers oddly. Mary's age looks like 30, or even 36, but comparison with
other entries suggests the final digit is an eight. (The usual rounding down
to the nearest five years has not been applied.
2) This is the first mentioned household within a multi-occupied house.
Other households are a governess, and three individual servants.
3) MS for James Matthews' occupation is the conventional code for a male
servant. This is odd because of what we know of James's occupation as a banker.
5) The final answer is the reply to the question "Were you born in this
county ?" i.e. Surrey. So 'N' would be the appropriate reply for anyone
born in Hampshire, Middlesex or the City of London.
This census record for the Matthews family was located and transcribed by Ian
Wallace along with these notes.
