Henry Vincent Reis (1874 – 1896)

Henry Vincent Reis was born on 22 February 1874 at 85 Islip Street, Kentish Town, London, the eldest son of Charles and Elizabeth (Woodburn) Reis, and he died on 23 May 1896 in Matabeleland.

Henry’s birth certificate can be viewed here.  The information regarding Henry’s death is taken from a memorial tablet placed in the ground near the entrance to the synagogue at Glasgow. The inscription on the stone is as follows:

Sacred to the Memory of
Henry Vincent,
A Trooper in the Co’ Chartered Forces,
Eldest son of
Chas L. and Lizzie Reis,
Who Died
On the Road between Tuli and Victoria,
At the Umzingwani River, Matabeleland,
South Africa
23 May 1896 Aged 22 Years.

By His Sorrowing Parents

The River Umzingwani is near the town of Bulawayo in modern day Zimbabwe.  The photos below show the stone and the entrance to the synagogue. Henry belongs to Reis Generation Three.
